Soon afterwards we watched the two NFL playoff games and chased them down with the movie Death Race starring Jason Statham. And before any further commentary of the movie begins, let me preface this with as Bill Simmons podcast would say, "This is a free flowing conversation that occasionally touches on mature subjects" so proceed with caution as viewers discretion is advised.
It was an action pack Saturday on a recent weekend. Big Money Tony and I headed down to College Park for the Maryland vs. Georgia Tech game at noon. The Terps barely looked like they had a pulse versus one of the weaker teams in the conference as they found themselves behind for most of the game. The Terps mounted a comeback late in the second half with a burst of energy to defeat the Yellow Jackets 68-61.
It didn't take long for the comments to flow once the movie began. The year is 2012 and the outlook is bleak. The economy has been rocked hard with many out of work. It seems very similar the movie Running Man from a complete regression of society in the streets and economy. I unloaded the first shell of the game after seeing the world in 2012 with "Wow! The Bush economy is still fucking us!"
Statham's character is eventually sentenced to prison for a crime he didn't commit. There wasn't even a one armed man to blame. The film skips right to the chase and bypasses any possible defense in court for Statham as he's coerced to enter the race for a chance at freedom to reunite with his baby girl.
It's a three day race. The better the race the more average everyday citizens subscribe to watch the race gamble and stay off the streets. The first leg of the race begins at 9 AM. I couldn't believe this. Who starts a sporting event that early? When would tailgating begin? It's way too early to watch a sporting event. Clearly the actress best known as Pamela Landy from the Bourne movie series just didn't get this point. Being more of an IRL fans, as I watch the Indy 500 every year, there has to be a little pre-game show and some hype leading up to any good race. BMT criticized me for not being a NASCAR guy and called me an elitist. Seriously, I hope everyone's kids can grow up to be an elitist. What's wrong with doing well in life?
As phase three began at a decent hour for a sporting event the ridiculous plot twists and action sequences heated up. The movie wasn't as bad as it could have been and wasn't nearly as bad as other action movies in recent years. The up side was that Eva Mendes didn't make the same mistake as appearing in Ghost Rider. It's easy to see Mendes as Statham's sidekick in the movie, but after Nicholas Cage couldn't save her in Ghost Rider there was no way Statham could help her. Who knows if she was ever considered for the role, but let's hope that if offered she turned the role down.

You forgot that I also noted how Joan Allen apparently really needed a paycheck. I can't believe she could be proud of that dreck.
I believe we both mentioned that. Hey, it's like that checkers commercial...you gotta eat. It's work. Look at all the prominant actors and they all had bad roles in the early part of their career.
You watch Entourage. Hopefully she took Ari's advice and took her next job before the previous one aired.
